Free training places available to unemployed employment lawyers

In response to current economic climate, ELA has launched a scheme to support lawyers wishing to enter the employment law field but who are unable to find work in the field. The scheme offers free access to our training programme, usually only available to ELA members. It is available to unemployed NQs within their first 2 years’ PQE who are wishing to become employment lawyers, whether or not they are members of ELA. It is also available to current ELA members who have been made redundant.

There are a limited number of places available free of charge under this scheme, which will be offered subject to availability and at the sole discretion of ELA. Whilst this scheme is offered across our entire training programme, where the course is residential, we regret we are unable to extend the offer to cover accommodation expenses.

Catherine Adamson, Associate, Hogan Lovells

Catherine trained at Hogan Lovells and qualified into the pensions group in 2009.  Since joining the group, she has advised both trustees and employers of occupational pension schemes on a variety of matters.  This includes different types of liability management exercises such as capping pensionable salary and closing schemes to future accrual, larger scale project work and more general day to day queries.  She has also assisted on contentious matters before the Pensions Ombudsman and the High Court and has been involved in advising on the pensions aspects of corporate transactions.

 Martin Scott, Partner, Mayer Brown International

Martin has extensive experience in the field of pensions law. His practice covers advising buyers and sellers on the pension aspects of sales and purchases of companies. He also advises trustees and employers on establishing, amending, merging and winding up occupational pension schemes. A large part of his practice involves advising on deficit issues and the interpretation of scheme provisions.

Claire Southern, Partner, Hogan Lovells

Claire trained at Lovells and has worked in the pensions group since qualifying in 2002. She acts for a range of corporate and trustee clients advising on all areas of pensions law including the establishment, merger and restructuring of pension arrangements. She also acts on the pensions elements of corporate transactions and outsourcings and has a specialist practice advising on derivative arrangements for pension schemes. Her major clients include Barclays Bank Plc, Mars, PepsiCo and the Trustees of the Cable & Wireless Pension Scheme. Claire is responsible for liaison with the firm's pensions litigation practice and works closely with them on contentious matters. 

Nicholas Squire, Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer 

Nicholas heads the Employment, Pensions and Benefits practice group. He specialises in both contentious and non-contentious employment law but also advises on a range of employee benefits, share scheme and pensions issues. He has particular experience in employment and related aspects of acquisitions and takeovers, executive remuneration and related contractual arrangements, severance packages for senior executives, trade union and worker representation issues and discrimination law.
