ELA launches 21 Day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge

The Employment Lawyers’ Association (ELA) is launching a 21 Day Racial Habit-Building Challenge for members on 21 January to help advance the conversation around race in the UK for employment lawyers and to look at how the profession can become more diverse and inclusive.

Marian Bloodworth is elected Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA)

ELA has elected Marian Bloodworth, Employment Partner at Kemp Little LLP, as their new Chair for 2020-22, with the appointment taking effect from 9 September 2020.

Marian has been Deputy Chair of the Association for the last two years, following four years as Chair of Training. She takes over the reins from Juliet Carp, Consultant Solicitor at Keystone Law, who served as ELA’s Chair from 2018-20.

ELA identifies crucial flaws with the Job Retention Scheme

Today, the Employment Law Association (ELA) has identified a number of significant flaws with the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, in a letter to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). A series of questions have been put to the Government department (which can be found in this paper) in the hope that they will address these wide-ranging issues for employers. The association is currently awaiting the Government’s response. 

EU Withdrawal Bill – Employment Lawyers Association draws attention to the potential impact of uncertainty on UK workplaces

Recently proposed amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill impacting established caselaw are likely to create substantial, and long-lasting, uncertainty for UK workplaces. Uncertainty can create problems for employers and employees in a number of ways. 

Employment Tribunals: ELA survey results revealed

“Tribunal administration is just not coping with the demands on it”, according to a new ELA survey of its members on the Employment Tribunal System. A year on from the previous ELA survey on tribunals, the picture continues to be bleak, with members highlighting the lack of judicial and administrative resource as a particular problem.

Workers’ rights under threat post-Brexit, says Employment Lawyers Association

The Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) is concerned UK workers’ rights will be threatened as a result of Brexit. Questions remain over how courts and tribunals will interpret or rely upon case law from the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) after the UK exits the EU.

The Employment Lawyers’ Association (ELA) welcomes the introduction of ethnicity pay reporting in its response, on behalf of its members, to the BEIS consultation

It is understood that the main purpose of the reporting requirement is for employers to actively monitor recruitment, retention and progression of staff across all ethnicities to ensure that diversity policies are working.  However, in its response, ELA recognises that pay reporting may be a blunt tool.

ELA welcomes Government’s corporate governance report
