This event has been organised by the ELA In-house Committee and is free to attend.

This event will look at discrimination law and the differences in jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions the current position is that sex, gender reassignment and marital status discrimination in employment are prohibited (Guernsey), a sum equal to three month's pay: Sex Discrimination (Employment) (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2005 (guernseylegalresources.gg). Ergo, no other grounds are currently protected in employment, and no protection at all applies in the provision of goods and services. If claimants are to have any recourse presently in Guernsey, it is to be found elsewhere, for example, by way of: (i) unfair dismissal (for those with sufficient service, etc; of course discrimination doesn’t necessarily involve dismissal); or, (ii) via other complaints mechanisms (such as to the GMC in the case of medical services provision). There are changes afoot but clearly it’s quite different to England. The panel of speakers will discuss the impact of those differences and how we negotiate through the issues they raise.
