This session focuses on the particular issues of hidden disabilities in the context of disability discrimination law.  By hidden disabilities we are referring to conditions such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism and Asperger’s. Our two speakers have particular expertise in this area, will look at what is meant by a hidden disability and the impact of the modern working world on hidden disabilities, such as open plan offices, technological advances and increased time pressures at work. They will discuss the practical considerations from the employee perspective (how to approach the issue with your employer) and tips for managing employees with hidden disabilities, including steps an employer should take when it suspects or finds out that worker is suffering from a hidden disability. The role of occupational health will be discussed, as well as what adjustments are both reasonable and available in this context.
