Part of our An Employment Lawyer's Guide to... series of events. These are one-hour webinars which introduce employment lawyers to specialist areas, highlighting issues to be aware of and red flags to look out for. These webinars are pitched at mid-level lawyers with a view to developing their practices.

Many employees, across a range of fields and disciplines, create intellectual property in the course of their employment, and their employers will wish to retain the benefit of that IP. How can this be anticipated and handled in employment contracts and policies and what challenges arise? How do disputes about IP rights, benefits and ownerships then arise in the context of employment law disputes, and what should lawyers acting for employees or employers take into account when bringing or defending legal action or seeking to resolve those disputes?

Beth Grossman, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, practices across media, employment and commercial law. She has experience of intellectual property as a civil claim in its own right, and how it arises in the context of employment disputes. Her practice spans trials and applications in the Employment Tribunal, the King’s Bench and the Chancery Divisions of the High Court.
