According to the World Health Organisation, high-quality social connections are essential to our mental and physical health and our well-being. Social isolation and loneliness are important, yet neglected, social determinants for people of all ages – including older people.

Social isolation and loneliness are widespread, with an estimated 1 in 4 older people experiencing social isolation and between 5 and 15 per cent of adolescents experiencing loneliness. A large body of research shows that social isolation and loneliness have a serious impact on physical and mental health, quality of life, and longevity. The effect of social isolation and loneliness on mortality is comparable to that of other well-established risk factors such as smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.

ELA's Pastoral Committee has organised a webinar by the Marmalade Trust which will discuss:

  • What is loneliness?
  • Who is affected?
  • Types of loneliness.
  • Key life indicators.
  • Prevalence.
  • How it impacts on health and wellbeing?
  • Three step approach.
  • Top tips and resources.

The Marmalade Trust is a leading loneliness charity, which was started in 2013 by a health care professional. They are experts in their field and love sharing their knowledge to help others. They have a normalising approach to viewing loneliness.

They do not believe that loneliness is something you should be ashamed of and yet there remains so much negative connotation surrounding it. Loneliness is a normal human emotion, one we are all likely to experience at some point in our lives. It may be starting a new school, moving to a new city, becoming a parent, or bereavement that triggers the feelings of loneliness – but its normal.  We are human beings; we need social contact. We need to stop stigmatising loneliness and begin to understand it.
