Pro bono volunteering opportunities

This page is for ELA members who are looking to participate in pro bono – welcome!

The ELA pro bono committee have compiled a database of pro bono volunteering opportunities for employment lawyers. This is a national database and contains details of both local, in person opportunities and remote volunteer roles, which can be undertaken from your desk or home.

The database is for all ELA members and we hope it can help facilitate more lawyers being able to join the pro bono community, and in turn help ELA members make an even greater contribution to access to justice. ELA recognises that it can be harder to find pro bono opportunities when you work outside of large firms with their internal projects and the database helps connect willing volunteers with employment law projects.

When considering a project, do be mindful of your qualification level, expertise required and the commitment which a project asks for. Pro bono providers really count on the reliability of their legal volunteers to provide a professional service. The projects on the database are not run by or affiliated to ELA (other than where expressly stated) and have not been vetted by the ELA team.’

The database is reviewed and updated annually but may not be completely up to date at all times, so please check directly with the project of interest about current opportunities and availability. All contact details are in the database and unfortunately ELA cannot answer queries on behalf of individual projects or clinics.

Project formats are often subject to change and many pro bono providers are still working to find the right balance of in person, hybrid and remote volunteers. Occasionally, a project may be listed which is no longer running, for funding or other reasons, and some projects run on a part year basis only.

Thank you to the ELA pro bono committee, volunteers from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP and Harbottle & Lewis LLP and the pro bono team and student volunteers from BPP University, for their contributions to compiling this database.
